IRPF brackets 2026

IRPF is progressive: each bracket has its own rate.

You don't pay a single percentage on everything. Only the part of your base above each threshold pays the higher rate — which is why your effective rate is always lower than your marginal rate. Combined rates (state + regional) on the general scale.

What is IVA?

IVA (Impuesto sobre el Valor Añadido) is Spain's VAT, a consumption tax on goods and services. It is included in the final price and businesses collect it on behalf of Hacienda (the Spanish tax agency).

Important IVA information

When does IVA apply?

  • Most goods and services sold in Spain
  • Imports of goods
  • Digital services supplied to consumers in Spain
  • Intra-EU acquisitions

IVA exemptions:

  • Financial and insurance services
  • Healthcare and education services
  • Rental of a primary residence

For autónomos and businesses:

  • You generally have to charge IVA from your first invoice (there is no minimum threshold)
  • IVA is filed quarterly using modelo 303 (the quarterly VAT return)
  • IVA paid on business expenses is deductible
  • Invoices must include the NIF, taxable base and rate applied
* IVA is an indirect tax on the consumption of goods and services. The standard rate in Spain is 21%, with reduced rates for food, books and medicines. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla do not apply IVA (IGIC/IPSI). More information
Frequently asked questions

Quick answers

What is IRPF?+
IRPF (Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Físicas) is Spain's personal income tax. It is progressive and split into a state part and a regional part, which is why the total rate depends on the comunidad autónoma where you live.
Do I have to pay tax in Spain if I am not Spanish?+
Yes. If you spend more than 183 days a year in Spain or your centre of interests is here, you are a tax resident and pay tax on your worldwide income, whatever your nationality.
What is the Ley Beckham?+
It is the special regime for inbound workers: for 6 years you pay a flat 24% on employment income up to 600.000 € (47% above that), instead of the progressive scale. You must apply within 6 months of registering with Seguridad Social.
How much Seguridad Social does an autónomo pay?+
Since 2023 the contribution (the RETA fee, the self-employed social security scheme) depends on your net earnings: in 2026 it ranges from about 205 € to 607 € a month. In your first year you can opt for the flat rate of 80 € a month.
When is the tax return filed?+
The tax return season usually runs from early April to 30 June of the year after the tax year.
What if I work remotely for a foreign company?+
If you are a tax resident in Spain you must declare that income here. Many digital nomads with a visa can also opt into the Ley Beckham.
